Kinetic Artwork Research

For this project we were referenced two artists, Rebecca Horn and Arthur Ganson. What immediately struck me in Horn's work was how visceral it was specifically how it pushed the external in internals of the figure outwards to the point of grotesque. Some examples were a tube net with blood pumping through it (blegh) or big constructs of fabric constricting and hanging off of nude figures. Her sculptures also get the same treatment with pianos splays it's own keys out and shotguns that splurt blood.

Arthur Ganson I have seen before, I attempted to construct a wire machine similar to him however mine turned out more a tangled mess but with a functioning axle. His sculptures have a delicate precision to them and he shows he's constructed his own tools and templates which he uses to build his gears and wheels to precision. His machines play with expression and function with his oil machines dousing themselves and his movement machine which hand writes "faster". I would like to find a nice medium between both artists as Horn explores the expression of objects and symbols with pianos, blood, and nude figures and Ganson focuses on function as expression and building his machines to be precise.

An idea I've wanted to try for a long time is an actuated mask that very much becomes it's own mechanical face. I don't want it to human like I want it to be a new profile that can be used in place for human expression and can emote just the same. I've done a small demo in processing of what it's idle expression could look like using NeoPixels. However I do want to make this more kinetic driven and possible controlled with a gesture input either using face, neck, or hand movements. I've had a few ideas of how to do this such as makeshift accelerometers using piezo discs with a marble to create an impact on inertia change or as was suggested to me a gyroscope that uses a weight on it's dial that will always point down.

I'm really invested in the ideas around cyberpunk but I'm struggling to reach any new ideas that explore the concepts around it and how they interact with our immediate digital age. My current ideas are more centered around an aesthetic appeal rather than exploring ideas. I do have a sketch that is looking at a very bio-synchronous relationship between machines and humans.

I'm still having a lot of trouble trying to come up with concepts to work with. I think what I have so far with these human accessories or human attachments might be where I end up going with the project.
